What Happens During the LASIK Procedure? - Frantz EyeCare

What Happens During the LASIK Procedure?

Did you know that LASIK is one of the most common procedures for correcting vision? When you have problems with your eyesight, you may get tired of wearing contacts or glasses.

While these devices are beneficial, they can get in the way of your daily tasks and activities. LASIK can permanently restore your vision, reducing or removing the need for glasses or contacts.

However, even if you’ve heard of or considered LASIK before, you may be wondering what happens during the LASIK procedure. Keep reading to learn about the steps of LASIK procedure!

What is LASIK?

LASIK can restore your vision if you have nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism caused by a misshapen cornea. The procedure uses specialized lasers to reshape the cornea and improve your eyesight.

The cornea is responsible for bending light back to the retina, and if it’s not shaped correctly, it can cause a refraction error, resulting in blurry vision. While glasses and contacts may work to clear up your eyesight, LASIK can permanently fix the refraction error for lasting results.

What Are the Steps Of LASIK Treatment?

Now that you know the basics of LASIK, you may be wondering what the actual procedure looks like and what to expect. Your eye doctor at Frantz EyeCare will discuss the steps with you, including how to prepare and aftercare instructions.

Preparation for Treatment

When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll receive numbing drops in your eye while reclining in a chair. Then, your eye doctor will use an instrument to hold your eyelids open and place a suction ring onto your eye. You may notice some pressure, and your vision will likely dim.

It’s also common to receive medication to help you relax.

Reshaping the Cornea

After preparing your eye for the treatment, your eye doctor will use a laser to make a small flap at the front of the eye. This allows them to reach the cornea.

Next, a specialized laser uses pulses to reshape your cornea. During this process, you’ll be asked to focus on a point of light to keep your eyes in a fixed position.

Once the cornea is the correct shape, the eye doctor will lay the eye flap back. You likely won’t need any stitches, as the flap will heal on its own.

After the Treatment

After LASIK, you may have symptoms like itchy or watery eyes. Your vision may be blurry for the first day or two.

You’ll also receive eye drops to keep you comfortable and may be required to wear an eye shield for protection. Your eye doctor will likely schedule a follow-up visit one or two days after the procedure.

It may take a couple of months for your vision to stabilize completely, but you’ll still be able to see. In most cases, you can resume normal activities the day after your LASIK surgery, like driving or going to work.
