A clear outlook: Gain confidence in cataract surgery

Frantz EyeCare can help restore your vision and improve your quality of life. Frantz EyeCare

As an ophthalmologist over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of helping thousands of patients regain their vision and restore their quality of life through cataract surgery. While the thought of undergoing any surgical procedure can be daunting, I want to assure you that cataract surgery is a safe, effective and essentially painless process. It is important to dispel some of the common myths and misconceptions surrounding cataract surgery, as well as highlighting the benefits, safety measures, and what you can expect during and after the procedure.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in your eye that affects your vision. It is a common condition that can occur due to age, injury or certain medical conditions. As a cataract develops, it can cause blurry or distorted vision, double vision or sensitivity to light. While glasses or contacts may help correct some visual issues, surgery is often the most effective way to restore clear vision.

One of the most common concerns about cataract surgery is the risk in this kind of procedure. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the risk of complications is less than 1%, so it is extremely low. Even in the event of a rare complication, vision can typically be restored to a significant degree with appropriate management of the complication. Additionally, many people worry that they will be put under general anesthesia during the procedure, but most cataract surgeries are performed under local anesthesia using sedation or twilight anesthesia. This means that you will be relaxed and able to breathe on your own.

Another misconception is that cataract surgery is an invasive procedure. It’s actually a minimally invasive procedure that involves making a small two-millimeter incision in the eye to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial one. Before the procedure, you will typically be given topical anesthetic drops to numb the eye and sedation to help you relax. You’ll then lie down on an operating table in a comfortable position. During the procedure, a small incision is made in the eye to access the cloudy lens, which is then removed using specialized instruments.  You can also elect the bladeless cataract surgery option in which I use a femtosecond laser to make the required incisions in the eye. An artificial lens (IOL) is then inserted into the eye and the incision seals on its own without the need for sutures.

There are several types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) available, and each is designed to address specific visual needs. Monofocal IOLs provide clear distance vision but usually require glasses for near vision. Multifocal IOLs offer improved near and distance vision, while Toric IOLs correct astigmatism. Extended range of vision IOLs provide excellent distance and intermediate vision. These advanced technology IOLs can significantly improve patients’ quality of life, allowing them to enjoy activities without the need for glasses or contacts.

After the procedure, you’ll rest for 30-60 minutes before being discharged from our outpatient center. You may experience mild discomfort, blurry vision, or sensitivity to light after surgery, but this should subside within one to two days. I prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops to aid in recovery. To minimize discomfort and promote a quick recovery, it’s essential to follow your post-operative instructions carefully. Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes for several days after surgery.

In addition to these physical aspects of recovery, it’s also important to address any emotional concerns you may have about undergoing cataract surgery. Many people worry about feeling anxious or nervous before or after surgery, but our experienced team is here to support you, and hopefully give you confidence in our expertise every step of the way. We will work closely with you to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your care. If left untreated, cataracts can progress rapidly and cause significant vision loss. Delaying surgery can lead to increased difficulty performing daily activities, reduced independence, depression and anxiety and even an increased risk of falls. It is important to remember that cataract surgery is a safe and effective way to restore your vision and improve your quality of life. By understanding what to expect during and after the procedure, you can feel assured about your decision to undergo surgery. Don’t let fear hold you back from experiencing the world with clarity and vibrancy again.
