Is LASIK Right For Me?

Are you tired of relying on glasses and contacts for clear vision? Do you want to experience crystal-clear vision and greater visual freedom than ever before?

LASIK is a vision correction procedure you’ve probably heard about if you have vision problems. After all, wearing contacts or glasses all the time can get frustrating.

You may want a more permanent solution that would make it easier to do everything you love with greater visual freedom, including hobbies, sports, and daily activities. For many people, LASIK is this solution.

Keep reading to learn more about whether LASIK is right for you.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a vision correction procedure that uses specialized lasers to reshape the cornea. The cornea is the clear part at the front of your eye that bends light back to your retina.

When the cornea isn’t the right shape, or when your eye is too long or too short, it impacts how the light bends through the eye, which causes blurry vision.

How Do I Know if LASIK is Right for Me?

While LASIK is a popular and effective procedure, some patients are better candidates than others. Some factors that can affect your LASIK candidacy include:

Your Age

You must be at least 18 to undergo LASIK, as your eyesight is more likely to shift before adulthood. If you undergo LASIK before your vision has finished stabilizing, you may not achieve your desired visual results.

Your General Health

Some health conditions and medications can make it harder to heal from LASIK. At your LASIK consultation, you’ll need to discuss your medical history with your eye doctor to determine whether LASIK is safe for you.

Some conditions that can impact your recovery from LASIK include lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, and diabetes. You also cannot undergo LASIK if you are currently pregnant or nursing, as the hormonal changes involved can cause your vision to become unstable.

Your Eye Health

Along with your general health, your eye health history can determine whether you’re a good candidate for LASIK. If you have conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, severe dry eye, or an ongoing infection, you are not a good candidate for LASIK.

Having corneas that are too thin will also disqualify you from LASIK, as the procedure requires your LASIK surgeon to create a flap in your cornea. If you have thin corneas but still want to achieve visual freedom, you should consider other vision correction procedures like PRK, SMILE, or EVO ICL.

Your Prescription

For LASIK to provide you with clearer vision, your vision issues need to be caused by refractive errors and fall within specific parameters. These refractive errors include astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness.

Your prescription needs to fall within the following parameters:

  • up to +6.00 diopters of farsightedness
  • up to 6 diopters of astigmatism
  • up to -12.00 diopters of nearsightedness

For patients with severe nearsightedness outside the range of LASIK, EVO ICL may be a better option. It’s also crucial that your prescription has remained stable for at least a year or longer to achieve the best results out of LASIK.

Your Visual Goals

If you want to reduce your reliance on visual aids and experience stunning, high-definition vision, LASIK may be right for you. Imagine enjoying an afternoon out on the lake, a night out with friends, or watching the sunrise on an early morning hike with remarkable visual clarity!

If you’re ready to be free of the frustrations of glasses and contacts and achieve better vision that’s all your own, you may be a good candidate for LASIK. The only way to find out if you’re a good LASIK candidate is to schedule a consultation with your eye doctor at Frantz EyeCare.

They will discuss your visual goals with you, review your medical history, and conduct an eye exam to determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK.
