Orthokeratology is a non-surgical vision correction procedure offered at Frantz EyeCare which uses Wave Corneal Molding technology to reshape the cornea while sleeping.
The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface in front of the eye that works in conjunction with the eye’s lens to bend light onto the retina allowing the eye to focus. When the shape of the cornea is too steep, flat, or has an improper curvature, a refractive correction is necessary in order to correct blurry vision.
Ortho-K Wave technology utilizes contact lenses to reshape the eye’s curvature and works to improve, control, and slow the impact of myopia (nearsightedness) in children and young adults.
Adolescent patients who are highly nearsighted are up to 25 times more likely to have vision-threatening eye diseases in adulthood, and Ortho-K technology can help to curb myopic progression.
Ortho-K technology is sometimes referred to as Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT), and is particularly beneficial in childhood in order to slow the progression of myopia; however, this treatment is not strictly limited to young children.
Children at least 6 years of age as well as active adults who may not qualify for another laser vision correction procedure like LASIK or SMILE.
Wave Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight (much like a retainer for the eyes) and work to gradually reshape the cornea over time. These lenses should not be worn during the day in order to prevent dryness and discomfort.
Ortho-K Wave technology allows the doctor to design corrective lenses to the contours of your eyes using advanced corneal mapping technology through topography. This results in custom-fitted corrective lenses that are uniquely tailored for each individual.
Typically, within two weeks of Ortho-K implementation, the patient will begin to experience significant improvement in their vision. Most patients can achieve 20/20 vision with consistent use.
The cost for Ortho-K Wave ranges from $1,000 to $1,500 per eye which includes the eye exam, the specialty lenses, and follow-up care.
Is Orthokeratology Safe and Effective?
As with any medical technology, there are certain health conditions that could make a patient an unsuitable candidate for Ortho-K. This might include:
- Corneal disease, injury or infection
- Chronic dry eye
- Corneal Hypoesthesia
- Challenges with eye allergies
Additionally, it is important for patients to closely follow the advice of their doctor concerning proper hygienic lens care and consistent use as prescribed. If use becomes irregular, then it will stall the vision correction process.
Your doctor may determine that you need more than one lens fitting after your initial fitting period. Sometimes corneal mapping might need to be repeated in order to achieve the goals you have for your vision. Your corneal health will be closely monitored in order to ensure that the Ortho-K treatment will be as effective as possible.
The length of your treatment will be determined by your original prescription, and how closely you have followed the prescribed protocol. Once the ideal vision has been achieved, your doctor will prescribe “final lenses” that should be worn every night. Because the cornea is comprised of flexible collagen fibers, it is possible for the eyes to return to their original shape if retainer lenses are not consistently used.
At Frantz EyeCare, our goal is to be a Total Eye Care provider for all patients – in all phases of life. By offering Wave Ortho-K technology, we are ensuring that patients have a non-surgical method for correcting their vision that is tailored to meet the needs of their individual lifestyle.
