We talk to patients about the benefits of LASIK surgery every day. Yet, it always surprises us how many people are afraid of LASIK. Some patients are so concerned about the perceived risks involved that they don’t even want to consider LASIK.
LASIK is not a new procedure, it has been around for over 20 years. And while the internet is probably full of scary stories, the reality is that 99 percent of patients are happy with their results.
We don’t know if LASIK is the right solution for you. But we know that making decisions out of fear is always a bad idea. So here are the five biggest fears surrounding LASIK — and why they aren’t so scary after all!
- “I am not sure I can even afford LASIK.”
LASIK does require a substantial investment — usually about $2500 an eye. An unfortunately, most insurance companies will not cover it. But can you really put a price on the freedom that comes from clear vision?
If that sentiment doesn’t move you, consider this — are you happy about the idea of paying for contacts and glasses every year for the rest of your life? Paying for your vision correction in one lump sum ends up saving you money in the long run. Not to mention, financing is always an option. Invest in yourself!
- “I don’t want to be awake during the surgery.”
Some patients become very uncomfortable at the thought of staying awake during a surgery on their eyes. They are afraid that they will feel scared or that they will feel pain.
Going under general anesthesia is actually riskier than simply staying awake for the surgery. Your doctor will give you a mild sedative to help you calm down and relax during the surgery. And while you will feel some pressure, you won’t feel any pain. Many people are surprised at just how quick and easy LASIK surgery is.
- “I don’t want a laser pointed at my eye.”
This is a completely understandable fear. We get it — the laser sounds scary. But the laser only makes contact with your eyes for a few seconds. And a special eye tracking system ensures that the laser can’t miss. Plus, we aren’t talking death lasers that you would see in the movies. These lasers will not burn your eyes!
- “I don’t want to be stuck on the couch for six months.”
Then you will be happy to hear that the recovery time with LASIK is really quite short. You will have some sensitivity to bright lights and your eyes will feel sore immediately following the surgery. Some patients report that their eyes feel gritty. But most people begin to improve within a few days, and most patients are able to return to work the very next day!
- “What if the doctor makes a mistake?
Can we give you our word that absolutely nothing will go wrong? Of course not. Surgery does come with risks but fortunately, the risks are incredibly low with LASIK. Most mistakes can be treated post-surgery.
